In keeping with Canon's Open Architecture approach, CONSOLE Image Control & Storage Software v1.1 delivers flexibility and versatility. It makes the XL H1, XH G1 and XH A1 HD camcorders even more powerful tools for the professional videographer.

With CONSOLE software for your XL H1, XH G1 or XH A1 you'll feel like you're sitting at the control console of your HD camcorder, in complete command.

In addition, most functions of CONSOLE software are compatible with Canon's XL2 digital camcorder.

  • Features

Pull Down Menus

CONSOLE is very simple and conveniently laid out in two basic environments: "Rec Panel" and "Play Panel".

Pull-down menus at the top of the screen provide a method of accessing the functions controlled by buttons on the Toolbar, except the "Work Space (W)" option, which is not duplicated on the Toolbar. If you'd like to save a customized display, you can use option "View (V)" to re-arrange the windows on your desktop.

The screen-grab above shows "Standard" default mode seen when you open the CONSOLE software for the first time.

An example of customized workspace is seen below for the "Rec Panel" environment. The "Play Panel" is closed until needed and "Custom Preset", "Camera Control", and "Focus Assist" windows have been moved right with "Rec Viewer", the "Vector and Wave Monitor" windows enlarged.

CONSOLE software lets you control gamma, master pedestal, color phase, custom presets and AE metering. The interface even includes a wave form and vector display for measuring and adjusting video and phase parameters. The software also allows you to control your camcorders' zoom, focus, white balance, shooting mode and frame rate, as well as its iris and shutter speed. Even the still image capture function of the camcorder can be operated remotely through CONSOLE. Each control function is displayed in a separate on-screen window, allowing you to customize the size and position of the displays to best meet your needs. With the additional compatibility of the XH G1 and XH A1 the software newly supports AE Shift ± 1.25, Gain +36 dB, and Pre-set shift function of white balance. Console Software v1.1 also includes new features found on the XH A1 and G1 including Color Correction, Skin Detail, and Sky Detail.

Easy-access Toolbar Buttons

These buttons can be re-arranged to best suit the users needs, from the default settings:

REC PANEL: Accesses the "record environment" as a whole. This is the environment you will be in when controlling the camera functions, manipulating the image, or capturing video onto the hard-drive. This function can also be controlled through one of the pull-down menus.

PLAY PANEL: Accesses the "playback environment" as a whole. These are the windows you'll need in order to playback footage captured to the hard-drive, or manage the storage of any video or photo files. This function can also be controlled through one of the pull-down menus.

OPTION SETTINGS: Accesses three pages of options; GENERAL, which allows you to customize storage and name files and folders. You can also use the "cache time" option to record up to 10 seconds of material before the "record button" is pressed. Great for live events when the start of action may be difficult to know; DV REC, lets you choose between three file types and recording modes in Standard Definition MiniDV; HDV REC, which gives you the options for recording in HDV, which controls only the signal coming into your computer, not what is being recorded on your camcorder.

The Recording Environment

The "Rec Panel" is comprised of 5 windows that allow you to have total control over all aspects of the image and camera functions. They are the "Rec Viewer" window, Video Monitor window, the Counter and the Audio Meter and controls. In addition, you'll find buttons to adjust the color, to split the screen display to show various images to which you may want to match and the position of camera preview. You may also access a Zebra pattern here as well. The "Record" button is located at the bottom of the "Information" window.

The Camera Control window allows the remote control of most of the camera functions. Some which may be controlled are:

  • AE shift and Exposure Lock
  • White Balance
  • Gain
  • Iris and Shutter
  • Zoom and Focus

The Vector and Waveform window is one of the major reasons why the CONSOLE software is so great for professional shooters. The Vectorscope and Waveform Monitor are two tools that no video shoot should be without.

CONSOLE also gives you these controls in this environment:

  • Color Picker
  • Focus Assist window
  • Custom Preset window
  • Color Gain
  • R/ Gain, G/ Gain, B/ Gain
  • Color Phase
  • Sharpness
  • Coring
  • Setup Level
  • Master Pedestal
  • Color Matrix
  • Gamma
  • Knee
  • Black
  • Noise Reduction
  • Import
  • Export

The Playback Environment

The Play Panel is comprised of 3 optional windows that allow you to review what you've just recorded or call up any older clips and stills that may be stored on your hard-drive or SD card.

They include the Play Viewer window which shows the name of the selected clip and a running counter (starting from zero on each clip and not matching the camera's timecode). A slider under the play button allows the alteration of the speed of the playback.

The File Browser window allows the selection of the clip you will play in the Play Viewer.

You also have access to a Vector and Wave monitor window as seen in the Rec Panel for monitoring the recorded video clip during playback.
